A Location on the Fox River

Oswego is located along the Fox River and sits about 47 miles from Chicago. Hudson Crossing Park commemorates the site on the Fox River where Native Americans and early settlers forded the waters. That’s how Oswego got its start. Founded in 1835, the Village of Oswego grew up and around the ford across the Fox.

Today the Fox River defines much of Oswego’s character by providing a recreational resource as well as a scenic landmark. Trails extend along the river and throughout the Fox Valley, including the Fox River Trail running 43.5 miles from Oswego all the way north to Crystal Lake. Saw Wee Kee Park stretches along the south shore of the Fox in Oswego. Residents can walk, bike, and run along the winding banks and canoe or kayak on the waters.

A Historic Downtown District

Oswego’s downtown district buzzes with life and activity, bolstered by year-round events like outdoor concerts, country markets, and an annual Christmas Walk. Restaurants, cafes, and shops make Oswego’s downtown a destination for residents of all ages. Oswego has its own microbrewery and a cluster of restaurants that include the locally famous My Sister’s Lil Donut Shoppe and the top-rated Piggy’s BBQ.

Abundant Green Spaces

Living in Oswego means having access to the abundant open spaces administered by the Oswegoland Parks District. This special governmental district serves about 20,000 households in a 38-square-mile service area that includes all of the Village of Oswego and the surrounding Oswego Township.

The Oswegoland Park District owns and maintains 64 parks spread across nearly 1,300 acres. Residents can enjoy green spaces in community parks like Violet Patch Park and Civic Center Park. Sixteen natural area parks include wetlands and prairies where residents can fish, picnic, hike, and view wildlife. And no less than nine greenways provide places to walk, bike, and get outdoors. There are plenty of parks with playgrounds and athletic facilities, too.

Most of Oswego is served by Oswego Community Unit School District 308.  The district consists of 22 schools spread across Oswego, Aurora, Yorkville, Montgomery, Plainfield, and Joliet.

District 308 schools located in Oswego include Brokaw Early Learning Center, Churchill Elementary, East View Academy, Fox Chase Elementary, Hunt Club Elementary, Old Post Elementary, Prairie Point Elementary, Southbury Elementary, Plank Junior High School, Thompson Junior High, Traughber Junior High, Oswego East High School, and Oswego High School. Parts of Oswego fall within Yorkville Community Unit School District 115. You can see a boundary map for elementary school zones here. All students in District 115 attend Yorkville Middle School and Yorkville High School.

Oswego residents can access health care through the Rush Copley Medical Group, which includes the 200+bed Rush Copley Medical Center in nearby Aurora. Edward-Elmhurst Health has an immediate care center in Oswego.

Highway Commuting Access

About 80 percent of Oswego residents drive to work. The average one-way commute time is 32 minutes. Illinois state highways Route 25, Route 71, and Route 31 extend through Oswego, providing convenient commuting routes. U.S. Highway 34 provides a direct route to Naperville. State highway Route 31 connects with Interstate 88.
